2021 in Haiti

    

    I will always be an advocate for Haitians. I will always be an advocate for empowering them and creating opportunities for them. I will always advocate for promoting their health literacy and access to healthcare. I will always do my best to show others the beauty of this country and the joyful resilience of its people. I will always have their best interests at heart. It is this country and its people that captured my heart over 10 years ago and has never seemed to let go.

    It has been over 2 years since I've been on this mountainous island. COVID, medical school, and Haiti's political climate have kept me here in sweet home Alabama. Haiti has been through a lot this year and my heart aches to hug my friends and help shoulder some of the burdens they carry on a daily basis. But because I can't physically be there, the best way I can advocate for them is to share their story and ask for your prayers. People often ask me how things are going in Haiti, and that is such a loaded question. Haiti has been hit with a lot this year, so I would like to outline and give a brief summary to help guide our prayers.

    After a year of COVID-19, inflation, political corruption, protests, and kidnappings...

• July 7, 2021 - President Moise Assassinated

            Haiti's president since 2017 was shot and killed in his home in the capital, Port-au-Prince. His wife was also shot but survived. Preceding his assassination, there had been countless protests demanding his removal from office. There was debate on when his term truly expired. When Moise began his presidency in 2017, there was a lot of hope and high expectations for him to carry out his promises. By the time of his assassination, he was not very well-liked. He had been accused of embezzlement and had formed a dictatorship-like government by eliminating the role of parliament. His hunger for sole power left Haitians infuriated and feeling hopeless politically. Protests increased in frequency and intensity. Since Moise's assassination, a new prime minister took office, Ariel Henry.

• August 14, 2021 - Earthquake

              A 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti's southern peninsula, killing over 2,000 and injuring thousands. Homes and buildings collapsed. People trapped under rubble. Aid was complicated by Haiti's political climate and gang violence. The location of greatest impact is one of the more rural areas of Haiti and can be very difficult to get to, further complicating victims' access to relief efforts. 

• August 17, 2021 - Hurricane Grace

            Only 3 days after a devastating earthquake, one that no doubt triggered PTSD symptoms from the horrific 2010 earthquake, a hurricane hit Haiti. Haiti is no stranger to hurricanes and seems to never catch a break from natural disasters. Just 3 days after the earthquake on the southern peninsula, people still buried underneath rubble and shelter destroyed, powerful winds and pounding rain complicated everything. With hurricanes, many cities become completely flooded and winds often knock down trees and tear off tin roofs. Crops are often destroyed, which serves as many families' sources of income and food. 

• September - Haitian Migrants in Texas 

            Around 15,000 Haitians had made the treacherous journey to Texas to seek asylum. They were met with Border Patrol agents that treated them unjustly and harshly. It was demeaning and undignified. In my personal opinion, human beings should never be treated like animals, and as humans, we should uphold ourselves to high standards of how we treat other human beings. I know immigration is politically controversial, but I am not talking about politics, I am talking about human behavior and human rights. I believe that everyone has the right to due process. Over the next several days and weeks, the majority of those Haitians were deported back to Haiti. Haiti was not equipped to receive these deportees. 

    This year of intense trauma and devastation has been compounded by the island's ongoing struggles with inflation, political unrest, inadequate healthcare, and lack of resources. I ask that you join me in praying expectantly - expectant that God will do big things, that only He can do. Pray faithfully knowing that our God is the God of the impossible. He is near to the brokenhearted and faithful to His children. 

    Specific Prayer Requests:

• Pray for government leaders as they decipher next steps and how to safely execute a presidential election.
• Pray for wisdom and discernment for government and community leaders as they work to make lasting changes. 
• Pray for gang members to have a change of heart, so that people are not walking around in constant fear. 
• Pray for the next generation to rise up in leadership and courageously disband corruption.
• Pray for pastors, lawyers, policemen, teachers, doctors, etc. to not be discouraged in their work for good.
• Pray for the perseverance of the Haitian people in these frustrating and scary times. Pray for them to never lose hope. Pray for changes that create environments that promote thriving versus merely surviving.

Meet Madam Celiane!!!

Madam Celiane may not always love being in the center of attention but she fills any room with joy just the same. She is a kind heart, a fierce competitor, a fervent supporter, and a passionate friend. When I think of Madam Celiane, I think of Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 9: “To the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may in its blessings.”

Next month marks two years of Madam Celiane working as a nanny at Children’s Hope. She is not yet married and currently lives her immediate family. On her days off, she enjoys spending time with her family at home. One of the best benefits of working at Children’s Hope for Madam Celiane is that she gets to help provide support for her own family.

 

She works in the girls house where Geralda, Estherline, Isemauela, Cassandra, Dieunita, Chilanta, Guiveline, Rose Mirtha, and Thiesy-Love enjoy every minute of her company. Thiesy-Love is our new addition to the Children’s Hope family and she fell in love with Madam Celiane at what seems to be first sight!

Madam Celiane loves spending time with the kids as they do what they love to do. Whether the child’s favorite activity is swinging or playing tag or playing a card game, Madam Celiane knows it is their favorite and joins in on the fun!  She loves these kids dearly and wants them to know how much they are loved and how much potential they have. She encourages these children to their potentials of becoming doctors, nurses, cooks, pastors, ministers, and lawyers.

Madam Celiane is a treasure that the Lord so graciously placed at Children’s Hope. We are thankful for her consistency and determination. We are thankful for her love and joy. We are thankful for the woman she is and the young girls’ lives that she is helping shape to become beautiful women as well.

Prayer Request: Pray for the Lord’s strength for Madam Celiane to live a life above reproach and for her to listen to God’s truth and combat Satan’s lies always.

Meet Madam Guerdie!!!

 

Madam Guerdie is a precious soul who brings her bubbly personality to every situation! She is caring and compassionate and constantly seeks the good in all things. She is a faithful servant of the Lord and a fierce lover of each child at Children’s Hope. She lights up every room that she walks into and is such a joy to be around.

Madam Guerdie has lived with her three sisters and two brothers since her mother died. Down the street from their home, about six years ago, Madam Guerdie met her future husband. After dating for several years, they got married this past month on January 20^th! Since Madam Guerdie began working at Children’s Hope in November of 2016, she has found deep and meaningful friendships with the other nannies here and many of them were able to attend her special day and celebrate the start of their beautiful marriage!

Madam Guerdie explains that growing up, she was always the little girl who wanted to take care of the other younger children and always loved helping out with the babies. It is in her nature to take care of and provide nurturing assistance to children, so working at Children’s Hope is like her ‘dream job.’ She loves doing anything and everything with the children. From singing to doing the girls’ hair to playing tag outside, Madam Guerdie loves being in the center of the fun!

Education is a priceless gift to us all, but this gift takes on a whole other level in Haiti where it can be, unfortunately, hard to receive. Madam Guerdie knows just how blessed our children are to be receiving such a great education and takes every opportunity to encourage them to always do their best in school. She believes that the principles and knowledge acquired in school will lead these children to one day having a great life on their own, using their skills and providing for their families.

Prayer Request: Pray for Madam Chrisla and her new husband as they adventure through the newlywed life. Pray for them as they begin their lives together – God has big things in store for these two!

Rosie

Meet Madam Rosie!!!

Madam Rosie’s personality matches her name! She is rosy and joyful at all times.  She is a bundle of joy, kindness, and compassion. She is gentle and FULL of patience. She sees each child as a beautiful individual with so much potential. Her loving demeanor is a magnet to all of the children at Children’s Hope.

Madam Rosie is fairly new to the Children’s Hope family but has been welcomed with open arms as she has so graciously become an admired role-model and a loved comforter. Madam Rosie began working as a nanny in June of 2017.  Since beginning working, she has been able to meet needs of several children on a more individual level. For instance, she has worked specifically with kids needing more attention due to behavioral issues or health issues. This help has been invaluable. Perhaps she gets her persistence and patience from being a mom to two boys of her own! Since Sundays are her off-days, she enjoys spending time with her boys by taking them to church and then doing some afternoon chores with them.

Since Madam Rosie has been available to meet more specific needs of the children, she has moved around between houses. She was originally a nanny in the boys house, where Jerry, Isaac, Frisson, Rene, Lovengy, Florvengy, Lovensky, and Nesly live. Now Madam Rosie nannies in the girls’ house that includes Wilda, Rosalinda, Chrislene, Junie, Raphaela, Darline, and Bianca. Rosie loves singing with the kids and playing different card games with them.

Madam Rosie is truly a breath of fresh air that provides light and encouragement to all of the children at Children’s Hope. With her warm hugs and her constant smile, Madam Rosie is a beacon of light not only at Children’s Hope but wherever she goes. She strives to do her best in all things and encourages the children to do so as well. She shows grace to our “little troublemakers” and inspires kindness in all of our children. She is a gift beyond measure!!

Solange

Meet Madam Solange!!!

 

Madam Solange is a calm and soft-spoken woman that elicits peace and compassion with her presence. Madam Solange only works part-time at Children’s Hope, but every time she walks through the gate, the girls are so excited to see her! Whenever she is at CH, she always has a baby in her hand, and its usually baby Bianca! She handles each girl with such care and grace, and we are so very thankful for the model that she provides to the children here at Children’s Hope.

Madam Solange has not yet been working at Children’s Hope for a year as she started in April 2017, but that has given the girls enough time to fall in love with their Madam Solange. She is a part-time nanny for 8 girls: Wilda, Bianca, Raphaela, Darline, Chrislene, Mitoliane, Rosalinda, and Junie. She has two children of her own as well; two sons. One is 37 years old and one is 18 years old and continues to work hard in school.

Favorite Color: Pink!

Favorite Food: Rice and Fried Plantains served with any Meet

Madam Solange names a few favorite activities that she most enjoys doing with the kids. She loves singing with in church and loves watching the girls as they passionately worship the Lord. She loves playing tag with the kids. And she thoroughly enjoys walking them to and from school. She says that the walks to and from school allow for more one-on-one conversations and she gets to learn all about their day at school.

Madam Solange has a pure, genuine love for the children here at Children’s Hope, and it is evident in all that she says and does. She takes care of our girls in such a way that points them directly to our Lord and Savior. We could not be more thankful for women like Madam Solange that have chosen to devote so much of themselves to our children here!!

Magda

Meet Madam Magda!!!

 

Madam Magda has been a vital part of Children’s Hope since she began working here as a nanny in 2014. She has poured into each child and lovingly led fellow staff members for almost four years now. She has been a source of encouragement through the up’s and down’s and a beaming light in the community.

Madam Magda lives only a few doors down from Children’s Hope. Her daughter, who is 27 years old and has now completed school, lives with her there. She can always be found singing at Children’s Hope, smiling and laughing on her front porch, or on the front row at church reciting passages of Scripture. Madam Magda shows unbelievable faith in everything she does. She has a way of involving the Lord in the mundane with her actions and words. She shows leadership in worship and expresses her desire for others to grow in their faith. Every Saturday night, the nannies gather together after they have put the kids to bed and they sing and worship the Lord together. Madam Magda played a large role in organizing this weekly event.

Favorite Color: Pink!

Favorite Food: Potatoes and Yam (a type of cooked root that is delicious!!!)

Madam Magda now works part-time at Children’s Hope, and therefore, works in several of the houses. She loves doing everything with the kids. She simply loves to keep them laughing! She loves these kids deeply and loves this job as well! She says that this job provides HOPE, not only to the children here but also to the staff who work here. It helps with financial provisions, yes, but it also provides hope in seeing the next generation raised in a healthy manner and in way that glorifies the Lord.

Madam Magda says that more than anything, she desires to remain faithful to Lord: “I want to help build our Eternal Home.”

Prayer Request: Earlier in the year, Madam Magda was hospitalized with an issue in her foot. She asks for continued prayers on this as she can still feel that it has not completely healed. She asks for prayers for overall health that she can always continue to work.

Marie Lourdes

Meet Madam Marie Lourdes!!!

 

Madam Marie Lourdes is so precious to the CH family. People might think of her as a stern and serious-natured woman but that assumption goes out the door as soon as you hear Madam Marie Lourdes laugh and sit down with her as she tells jokes. She has a heart of gold and loves these children fiercely.

Madam Marie Lourdes is originally from the capital of Haiti, Port-Au-Prince. She has four children of her own, of whom she is extremely proud of! She has two daughters and two sons, and two of her children are now married and starting families of their own. Madam Marie Lourdes has been working as a nanny for Children’s Hope for almost three years now. She is the nanny for 8 boys: Mykerson, James, Luckner, Jean Phylippe, Yvelt, Junior, Dovensky, and Guichard. The little ones keep her on her toes, but Luckner and Jean Phylippe love to help Madam Marie Lourdes out with entertaining them!

Favorite Food: “All food is delicious!”

Madam Marie Lourdes says that she loves this job so much because she loves these kids so deeply – “It’s like having a bunch of grandkids!” She explains that this job would be impossible for someone who does not genuinely love these children. “When you love these kids, you are able to show patience towards them in all times.”

She loves playing games with them and singing songs with them. She even has specific songs for some of the baby boys that everyone knows! She makes the boys go outside and run and play. Marie Lourdes wants all of these boys to be able to one day finish school and being able to take care of themselves. She sees her role as a nanny as a way to empower them and to make this wish for them become a reality.

I asked Madam Marie Lourdes, and this was her response: “As long as I am in the Hands of God, I’m good.”

Meet Madam Juliana!!!

 

Madam Juliana is so dear to our hearts at Children’s Hope. She is an incredible woman of God who shows remarkable attributes of a kind, loving, strong, disciplined daughter of the King! Madam Juliana amazes us constantly with her unwavering drive to do her best and her compassionate spirit as she pours into the kids at Children’s Hope.

Madam Juliana has been working at Children’s Hope since July of 2015. She is the oldest of 11 children. She has seven younger sisters and three younger brothers. She lives at Children’s Hope full-time, which serves as a unique gift of consistency for the girls that she is a nanny for. Madam Juliana is working towards a high school degree, so after she sends the kids off to school each morning, she also goes to school. Needless to say, she is an incredibly hard worker as she balances school and work with such grace (and success!).  After high school, she plans to study nursing, and we have full confidence she will be a great one!

She is the nanny for 7 beautiful girls: Wilda, Rosalinda, Chrislene, Junie, Raphaela, Darline, and Bianca. Madam Juliana is a precious role model to these girls and all the children at CH. Not only does she set an example of diligence in her studies and working hard to pursue her dreams, she also helps lead the children and staff in worship every Tuesday night.

Madam Juliana is wise beyond her years. She loves each child at Children’s Hope and wants to help them in any way she can. She loves working with the children learning Bible verses and songs for church. Madam Juliana actively tries to instill three key concepts into her girls: 1) Respect everyone. 2) Learn well. 3) Apply God’s Word.

Prayer Request: Pray for Madam Juliana to finish high school and be able to attend nursing school. Pray for her to experience God’s presence always.

Raphael

Meet Madam Raphael!!!

 

Madam Raphael is our rock. She is a source of constant encouragement and grace. She is the warmest hug and the strongest comforter. She exemplifies leadership qualities that all of the nannies and staff admire. She is wise and compassionate, loving and faithful.

Madam Raphael has been working at Children’s Hope since October of 2014. She has been married to her husband for over 19 years and has two beautiful girls. Her oldest daughter recently turned 19 years old and has just completed high school. Her youngest daughter is 18 years old and is a senior in high school. And she is very proud of their accomplishment so far and is excited to see how the Lord will continue to work in their lives. 

Favorite Color: Every color in the rainbow!

Favorite Food: Fried Plantains with any kind of Meat!

She is the nanny for 8 boys. Rene, Lovensky, Frisson, Lovengy, Nesly, Florvengy, Isaac, and Jerry, all LOVE Madam Raphael.  And she LOVES them. She loves spending time with the boys, playing games with them and helping them with their homework. She is an effective leader in training them up to be men of God. She instills in them a good work ethic and kind habits. She helps them learn Bible verses and encourages them to work hard in their studies so they can become whatever they want.

Madam Raphael is the epitome of faithfulness and consistency. Not a day goes by without her letting each child know how loved they are. She keeps them busy with chores and games and encourages them constantly. We are so thankful to have women like Madam Raphael pouring into our children here at Children’s Hope. Children’s Hope would not be what it is today without her love and leadership.

Chrisla

Meet Madam Chrisla!!!

Madam Chrisla is truly beautiful on the inside and the outside. Her demeanor creates a calm, peaceful atmosphere wherever she goes. But her quiet and kind nature is not isolated from her bubbly personality and contagious laughter. 

Madam Chrisla is originally from La Montay. She lives with her parents, four sisters, and one brother. Madam Chrisla began working at Children’s Hope on March 3, 2014. She is flexible, yet consistent. And this quality is what makes her great at her job. She has been a nanny in several of the houses and now works part-time filling in wherever she is needed. Because of this, she has the unique experience of working with every child in his or home. Inevitably, she is well known and VERY well loved by each and every child at Children’s Hope.

She loves her work here at CH. She explains how great these kids truly are. She also says that one reason she enjoys this job so much is because of the love and support she experiences from the other nannies and the directors. Our on-site director, Mr. Henri, seems to have that effect on people – he loves deeply and encourages relentlessly!

Madam Chrisla loves these kids so well and it is evident in all that she does. She loves playing with the kids, pushing them on the swing, and jump roping with them. Her biggest desire for the kids at CH is for each one to learn what they love, so that they can grow up and find careers in a field that they truly enjoy and can bring them happiness. These children have so much potential, and Madam Chrisla wants each child to meet his potential. She is also an incredible asset in making this happen!

We are so thankful for women like Madam Chrisla. Women that have a pure love for the younger generation. Women that serve tirelessly and faithfully. Women that see the best in others and help them see it as well. Women that love the Lord and show it in everything they do. We are so thankful for Madam Chrisla!!

Prayer Request: Pray for Madam Chrisla to fully attain the spiritual gift of gentleness. Pray for her and her family as they work to develop their house and make it a safer, more livable home.

Claudia

Meet Madam Claudia!!!

Madam Claudia is one of a kind. She is fierce, spunky, kind, gentle, full of life, and full of love. She is responsible and levelheaded yet overflowing with energy. Madam Claudia is a consistent, loyal friend and a determined, God-fearing caretaker.

Madam Claudia was born in Port-au-Prince and moved to Jacmel in 2005. She now lives with her cousin here in Jacmel and has two brothers and three sisters. She has been working at Children’s Hope since 2015. She is a nanny for 8 boys here at CH, and she has her hands full! Little Jerry (who has been attached to Claudia’s hip since day one), Isaac, Frisson, Rene, Lovengy, Florvengy, Lovensky, and Nesly are blessed beyond measure to call Madam Claudia their nanny. Claudia is also in charge of the Clothing Depot, which she has wonderfully organized. When a child needs some new clothes or a new pair of sandals, his or her nanny comes to Madam Claudia so she can get what the child needs from the depot.

“I love these kids because they are God’s children, and He commands us to love one another. God is the one who gives me the strength to never become discouraged in loving others.”

Madam Claudia can always be found on the soccer field running around with the boys or sitting on the front porch of their house making the boys roll over laughing with her jokes. Needless to say, she is so very loved by each boy in her house and looked up to by each child at CH.

She is a killer jump roper, a dedicated friend, a skilled soccer player, and a loving nanny. Children’s Hope has become a brighter place from the moment Madam Claudia began working here. We are so thankful for her leadership and never-ending love for the most well deserving children. We LOVE Madam Claudia and the joy she brings!

Prayer Request: Pray for Madam Claudia’s spiritual life to constantly grow and be strengthened. Pray for her to experience a connection to God in newer depths as she continues to grow in her faith. Pray for the potential of Madam Claudia to one day get married and have a family of her own.

Meet Madam Gena!!!

 

Our beloved Madam Gena is a pillar of wisdom, a joyful encourager, and a fierce prayer warrior. She is a model of strength and kindness. You can go to Madam Gena with any worries, and she knows just the words to say. She knows everything about anything and always has a story to tell.

Madam Gena has been working at Children’s Hope since 2014. She is a nanny for 7 of our precious girls: Wilda, Rosalina, Chrislene, Raphaela, Bianca, Junie, and Darline. All of the kids of CH and two teenagers of her own absolutely adore Madam Gena with her easy-going, yet fun-loving personality. Gena states that the kids’ love for her is such a gift and picture of God’s gift that she is constantly thanking God for.

Madam Gena expressed two things that are key to this work: love and patience.  She explained that this is how the children can become confortable with you.

“I love talking with the kids. I love discussing why they are here. It is so important to help show them how God is at work in their lives. Praying together is one way I can help them see Him in their lives.”

One thing we love about Madam Gena is her intentionality. She takes each day by storm as she constantly reminds those around her that we do not know what tomorrow holds. Because of this, she holds a sense of urgency in her heart to train these kids up; to love them in such a way that they can be best prepared for whatever the future holds. Madam Gena considers this pure joy.

Madam Gena is full of life and is one of the best shoulders to cry on. She is so admired for the qualities of Christ that she exemplifies. Every child who has experienced Madam Gena’s love here at Children’s Hope has been exponentially blessed, and we could not be more thankful. We love our Madam Gena!!

Prayer Request: Pray for Madam Gena to continue to develop in her faith. Pray for her house to be finished and for the pain she often experiences in her feet.

Midrene

Meet Madam Midrene!!!

Madam Midrene is one of our precious nannies for the girls at CH. She loves all things girly, but knows how to dominate the boys on the soccer field. She is ever joyous with her calm and loving demeanor.

Midrene was born and raised in Jacmel with her one sister and four brothers. She is the second youngest of the family and loves being an aunt to lots of nieces and nephews! She and her younger brother live with her mom and dad. Madam Midrene is a position where she is the main caretaker in the household. And she takes on this role with such competence and grace.

Madam Midrene has been working at Children’s Hope since 2015. She is a nanny for 8 of our sweet girls: Geralda, Estherline, Mitoliane, Isemauela, Cassandra, Chelanda, Guiveline, and Rose Mirtha. She loves keeping the girls as busy as possible with lots of singing and playing (especially soccer!). 

“Instilling good principles into the children can be difficult, but I hope they see these principles in me and can follow my example.”

Midrene loves business and is learning cosmetology. These cosmetology skills keep our girls’ hair looking fabulous!!

Madam Midrene is a breath of fresh air. She loves everyone so deeply. She seeks the Lord wholeheartedly. And she brings so much joy and light wherever goes. We love her SO much!!

Prayer Request: Please pray for Madam Midrene’s fiancé to get the papers he needs to return to Haiti. They have been engaged for 3 years!

Meet Madam Manouche!!!

Madam Manouche is one the nannies for the girls at CH. She is sweet, spunky, and super stylish. She plays hard and loves even harder. She is an amazing role model for our girls.

Madam Manouche is originally from Beniat and moved to Jacmel when she was five years old. She has lived in Jacmel ever since. She now has a beautiful 6 year-old girl of her own.

Madam Manouche has been working at Children’s Hope since 2015. Manouche said that working at CH has not only allowed her to help take care of others but has also given her the chance to truly take care of herself. She is a nanny for 8 precious girls: Tamara, Telancia, Woodlove, Dieunita, Shinaika, Marinadine, Wislanda, and Djanelie.

Madam Manouche truthfully stated that, “when you work with these kids, you smile a lot more!” And she keeps them smiling too! Manouche is a bundle of joy never seen without a smile.

 

Favorite Food: ALL FOOD!!

She loves to keep things fun and exciting for the girls! She gives the older girls dance lessons regularly. These girls often perform their dance routines at the CH church services held on Tuesday evenings. Madam Manouche not only leads the girls in dancing but also helps lead everyone in worship during these services. Unsurprisingly, Madam Manouche said that her favorite things to do with the kids are to sing, dance, and play.

We are beyond thankful for Madam Manouche and the incredible impact that she is making on each and every child at Children’s Hope. She is so loved by all!!
